We are all learning! Talk: Sir Ken Robinson on Changing Education

February 23rd, 2012

This is an excellent animated video of a talk by Sir Ken Robinson, education and creativity expert on Changing Education.

What I love about how Sir Ken Robinson discusses Changing Education is he shows clear insight of how through the evolution in innovations and technology of the last few hundred years (if not longer), our behaviour and responses to the world around us has changed in our every day life  - in what we do, what we pay attention to, and the internal and collaborative processes we use to learn, adapt and survive in a rapidly changing technological environment. He then contrasts this very eloquently with the view that for what ever reason, the pace of change in how we think about education, learning and formal learning contexts has not changed at the same pace or in the same way. He uses school education to exemplify his point. For me this video also spoke of higher education. » Read more: We are all learning! Talk: Sir Ken Robinson on Changing Education

Social Ways of Working in Higher Education

January 24th, 2012

Currently I sit on a task and finish group discussing the use and future of social technologies in my university. As a result I’ve been reflecting on how we think about the emerging developments in social technologies and their impact on the ways we work in academia. Like many organisations, social technologies are greatly influencing the ways we work in higher education. They are influencing not just our communication activities, but also the activities we do for education and learning, research and administration. In this, all that we do as educators, researchers, students and administrators within the higher education sector is organisational communications or more formally termed: engagement. For example: » Read more: Social Ways of Working in Higher Education

A Wiki Way of Learning

February 15th, 2011

A Wiki Way of Learning is the title of a study I’ve been working on over the past two years in collaboration with Professor Martin Weller (Open University). The study explores the design, use and effect of Wiki technology for collaborative learning in postgraduate management education.

Collaborative learning has a diverse meaning, from group or team-based working, to peer-to-peer interaction on shared tasks. With the rise in dynamic ubiquitous digital technologies has provided another rich layer to collaborative learning as the need to learn how to collaborate now coexists with the need to learn how to use digital technologies. » Read more: A Wiki Way of Learning

The Professional Socialisation of Digital Knowledge & Learning

November 5th, 2010

This week I gave a talk at Northwestern in the School of Communication. Part of my talk was inspired by some of my past work and my evolution in how I consider and see Digital Knowledge and Learning. In this blog post I touch on an element of this story, the professional socialisation of digital knowledge and learning and why ‘social context’ of ‘learning about’ and ‘using’ digital technology, is important in life and therefore in technology research. » Read more: The Professional Socialisation of Digital Knowledge & Learning

Introducing My Stateside Learning Journey 2010

October 17th, 2010

With my Apple Mac and iPhone as travel companions, I’ve started this weekend the first stage of my Stateside Learning Journey (SLJ). So what is a learning journey? Well, we are all on a learning journey, in life, work and play. However, this is a journey with a specific remit to ‘learning in situ’, visiting institutions on ‘The States’ side of the world (but not just the US), to take part in a digital media learning experience through sharing experiences, thoughts, ideas with scholars, students, people I meet along the way and within myself, through my own critical reflection. » Read more: Introducing My Stateside Learning Journey 2010

AM Conference 2010: Discovering a New DNA of Marketing Academe

July 10th, 2010

Well this weekend ends a very busy and insightful week. On Monday I made my way to Coventry for the 2010 Academy of Marketing (AM) Conference being hosted by Coventry University Business School. The theme of the conference was ‘transformational marketing’ – the role of marketing in driving organizational, social, community and environmental change. So I was hoping to see a few papers talking about digital media in marketing driving this type of change. » Read more: AM Conference 2010: Discovering a New DNA of Marketing Academe

Digital Media Literacy in Business, Media Management & Marketing

June 23rd, 2010

1CEMFHLast week I had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with DK, Mark and Karl from Mediasnackers, facilitating a Business Development workshop for them. At this workshop we discussed the What, How and Why Mediasnackers do what they do. It was a great afternoon, but not only did Mediasnackers walk away with some insights into their evolution, so did I!

The afternoon inspired me to reflect on the very same questions for what I do, the reason I started CASE Insights and found myself leaving the commercial marketing research sector for academic research and teaching. Reflection I haven’t done for a couple of years and given how difficult it can be juggling teaching, research, administration, marking, supervision and life … I thought it was increasingly important to revisit these questions! » Read more: Digital Media Literacy in Business, Media Management & Marketing

DML2010: In reflection!

March 1st, 2010

question-markIn an earlier post at the beginning of DML2010, I recalled a number of questions raised for reflection throughout the conference and from this I added a fourth. However I heed the onus from Sonia Livingstone that perhaps we are asking the wrong questions and from her talk, a number of the questions/statements she raised [that I tweeted] I include here – as reflections from my DML 2010 experience (and no doubt clouded by my own societal and institutional influences). » Read more: DML2010: In reflection!

DML2010: Sonia Livingstone on Youthful Participation in Digital Media

March 1st, 2010

84782290A few weeks ago while on a visit to the US, I attended the ‘Digital Media Learning‘ conference in San Diego. The closing key note was given by Prof. Sonia Livingstone from London School of Economics (LSE).

The conference itself opened my eyes to a number of things, one important thing is that we need to always remember the interdisciplinary nature of this field. Without an open mind and participation in conversation and sharing, often the perspective from which we approach digital media learning can cloud and sometimes blind us from anothers view of this space. As adults researching this space, our view of the world is very different from those we research and observe – be it child, young adult in HE or those engaged in lifelong learning. But from each other we can certainly share and learn.

Prof. Sonia Livingstone provided one of the best talks I’ve been fortunate to listen to in this space, and like Henry Jenkins and S.Craig Watkins, made me think. From her talk, » Read more: DML2010: Sonia Livingstone on Youthful Participation in Digital Media

DML 2010: Henry Jenkins on Diversifying Participation!

February 19th, 2010

participation

Tonight in the Chair’s introduction to the DML 2010 conference, Dr. Henry Jenkins posed some interesting insights into what is emerging and what we are facing when it comes to Digital Media Learning …asking the delegates to consider more widely diversifying participation in learning communities …

From this introduction I tried to capture a number of key insights … a colleague and friend of mine, DK from MediaSnackers, a social media organisation specialising in engaging youth-based organisations, once spoke that he endeavours to make people either ‘think’ or ‘smile’ from his talks, meetings or conversations. Well tonight Henry Jenkins … most certainly made me think …

Below are a number of the key insights I took out of Henry Jenkins talk … » Read more: DML 2010: Henry Jenkins on Diversifying Participation!
