AM Conference 2010: Discovering a New DNA of Marketing Academe

July 10th, 2010

Well this weekend ends a very busy and insightful week. On Monday I made my way to Coventry for the 2010 Academy of Marketing (AM) Conference being hosted by Coventry University Business School. The theme of the conference was ‘transformational marketing’ – the role of marketing in driving organizational, social, community and environmental change. So I was hoping to see a few papers talking about digital media in marketing driving this type of change. » Read more: AM Conference 2010: Discovering a New DNA of Marketing Academe

DML2010: Sonia Livingstone on Youthful Participation in Digital Media

March 1st, 2010

84782290A few weeks ago while on a visit to the US, I attended the ‘Digital Media Learning‘ conference in San Diego. The closing key note was given by Prof. Sonia Livingstone from London School of Economics (LSE).

The conference itself opened my eyes to a number of things, one important thing is that we need to always remember the interdisciplinary nature of this field. Without an open mind and participation in conversation and sharing, often the perspective from which we approach digital media learning can cloud and sometimes blind us from anothers view of this space. As adults researching this space, our view of the world is very different from those we research and observe – be it child, young adult in HE or those engaged in lifelong learning. But from each other we can certainly share and learn.

Prof. Sonia Livingstone provided one of the best talks I’ve been fortunate to listen to in this space, and like Henry Jenkins and S.Craig Watkins, made me think. From her talk, » Read more: DML2010: Sonia Livingstone on Youthful Participation in Digital Media

DML 2010: S. Craig Watkins on Black and Latino youth remaking the participation gap!

February 21st, 2010

S.Craig_WatkinsFollowing the chair’s introduction by Dr. Henry Jenkins, the opening keynote talk was delivered by S. Craig Watkins. Highly regarded for his research about race, youth and digital media usage and his books, The Young and the Digital and Hip Hop Matters. He was invited to join the MacArthur Foundation Series on Youth, Digital Media and Learning.

With this in mind and with no experience in this area I was looking forward to hearing the perspective from which he considers this space. Below is provided a few key insights I took out of his keynote talk: » Read more: DML 2010: S. Craig Watkins on Black and Latino youth remaking the participation gap!

DML 2010: Henry Jenkins on Diversifying Participation!

February 19th, 2010

participation

Tonight in the Chair’s introduction to the DML 2010 conference, Dr. Henry Jenkins posed some interesting insights into what is emerging and what we are facing when it comes to Digital Media Learning …asking the delegates to consider more widely diversifying participation in learning communities …

From this introduction I tried to capture a number of key insights … a colleague and friend of mine, DK from MediaSnackers, a social media organisation specialising in engaging youth-based organisations, once spoke that he endeavours to make people either ‘think’ or ‘smile’ from his talks, meetings or conversations. Well tonight Henry Jenkins … most certainly made me think …

Below are a number of the key insights I took out of Henry Jenkins talk … » Read more: DML 2010: Henry Jenkins on Diversifying Participation!

If a picture says 1000 words – how do YOU see Marketing?

January 14th, 2010

If I say the word marketinA picture is worth more than 1000 wordsg – what do you think of? What image comes into your head? Who do you think of?

We are creating a story of how people REALLY see marketing – not in words, but in pictures!

I’ve been asked to give a presentation entitled Marketing for a public presentation on the 25th of March at Chapter, in Cardiff. So, I want to build a presentation about how YOU see marketing? Not how I see it.

This presentation is not a usual academic lecture about research, case studies, or the state of Business Schools or higher Education in the UK (How Boring!!). This is far more interesting. It is for the first ever Pecha Kucha Night in Cardiff … so I want to do something a little different.  » Read more: If a picture says 1000 words – how do YOU see Marketing?

CASE Insights Speaks at Ignite Cardiff 2009

October 15th, 2009

ignite-cardiff Well tonight in Cardiff is the 3rd Ignite Cardiff event! So what is Ignite?

Imagine that you’re on stage in front of an audience of hundreds of people, doing a five-minute presentation using slides that automatically rotate every 15 seconds, whether you’re ready or not. What would you do? What would you say? The entry on Wikipedia provides a more detailed overview of Ignite events around the world.

Well having thought about this scary prospect and being an academic who makes a living out of lecturing and talking, I thought I might just be up for the challenge. Can an academic really only talk for 5 minutes?

So tonight at Wales Millennium Centre, I’ll be joining a list of 15 other speakers to talk for 5 minutes on a topic of my choice. My presentation is entitled: “If I can drive does that make me a mechanic!” and stems from two earlier posts on this blog about “the mechanics of social web expertise” and “measuring social web expertise.” Most importantly though this presentation is about my dad!

This Ignite Cardiff event is being hosted in partnership with Cardiff Design Festival and organised by Cardiff Web Scene and sponsored by Box UK.

Getting Connected: Social Media & Marketing in a Networked Economy

June 9th, 2009

Green WorldLast year I was asked by Cardiff University to deliver a lecture for the Cardiff Innovation Network (CIN) about Social Media and Marketing.

So on 4th March 2009, I delivered a 2 hour public presentation entitled Getting Connected: Social Media and Marketing in a Networked Economy to an audience of 108. » Read more: Getting Connected: Social Media & Marketing in a Networked Economy
