		<description>Length of experience certainly isn&#039;t a measure of competence in the software development business although most recruiters and non-technical managers hire on the basis of &quot;length of time elapsed using technology x&quot;. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I&#039;ve observed two things about this:&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;1) People routinely ask for more &quot;years of experience&quot; in a technology than the total number of years for which the technology has existed(!), and&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;2) Length of time spent using a technology doesn&#039;t measure that person&#039;s success or effectiveness. It&#039;s possible for people to work inefficiently for years without significant interest in improving their work or understanding.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Why don&#039;t people take more of an interest in measurable results gained from using a technology instead?</description>
